WOV’s Insectarium: Yellow Dragonfly

RURAL BLISS |

Look around and gaze this flying gem of nature

[Veggie Shade: A yellow-colored dragonfly closed up over a Bermuda grass background for a photo op.]

Nature has a lot to offer – from dramatic landscapes to eye-catching creatures. Sure thing, they attract us. Tourists, photographers and nature lovers are increasing in trend because of this glorious spectacles.

Walking near the farmlands of Bangui, Ilocos Norte feels like you're a visitor to your own place. You get to see a lot of nature wonders – more than 20 species of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, migratory birds and colorful bugs. You'd wish you were a resident of the place. Then realizing, you just live nearby. And you won't stop smiling after.

The only problem now would be the difficulty level of classifying these marvelous species. For instance, this dragonfly that came before my eyes last September. First, I thought they were the usual Diplacodes trivialis. Then, I identified them Trithemis pallidinervis. But they are not; they have different markings in the abdomen. Can anyone help me about this?

Unknown Dragonfly: A dragonfly with black and yellow markings alighted in a barbwire of a house near the ricefields.

God created the world ingeniously. Very clever and imaginative that everything has its own purpose. Sometimes, you might think you lose the game but actually you did not. You just received your prize from Him. We are not talking about your consolation prize here my dear friend but your biggest lesson in life that you might waste if you will not recycle your principles. Drive smoothly. Our journey has just started. Do not fool yourself to shortcuts because you might miss this one of a kind learning experience.

WOV’s Insectarium: Gaika Butterfly

RURAL BLISS |

Photographing the tiniest in Ilocos Norte

[Gaika Blue: The half-inch butterfly in the lush farmland of Bangui overlooked by many locals.]

DESCRIPTION

By just taking this photo of a particular grass blue butterfly species, I can say that a lot of passers-by there have ignored another marvel of nature because of its size comparable to the nail of your (schoolage children) smallest finger. Yes, they are really tiny that it took me some time to find the proper angle of my poor point and shoot camera for this dream macro shot. Why blue anyway? This is simply because the upperside wings (the hidden part when the wings are held together) are amazingly colored with blue.

CLASSIFICATION

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lebidoptera
Family: Lycaenidae
Genus: Zizula

WOV’s Insectarium: Colorful Damselfly

RURAL BLISS |

Behold this awesome splendor of nature

[Tinted Shaft: An orange young female Agriocnemis damselfly perching near the verdant rice fields of Ilocos Norte.]

DESCRIPTION

Prime your eyes because scouting them is difficult! Ward off your hands because picking them is rude! And smile because seeing them is marvelous! They are damselflies – slender, delicate, and weak-flying insects resembling like dragonflies which eyes are separated and wings are held vertically.

Embellishing the grasses of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, alongside drains, forest and open streams, ponds and rice fields are colorful variety of damselfly, the Agriocnemis rubeola. This particular species originating in Southeast Asia is extending 25-millimeter length and spreading 17-millimeter wings.

These marvels of the greensward, gliding during the daytime are observed to change in color as they mature – from an orangey young to greenish adult female Agriocnemis rubeola. They also differ in color according to their sexes, for instance, male species are hued turquoise or greenish blue.

Damselflies are very beneficial in the environment, in the ecosystem. They help in controlling the numbers of harmful insects as they are ferocious predators of flies, mosquitoes, moths and beetles. They are also used as indicators of clean or polluted waterways, streams and ponds, that is, they are unable to breed without such sanitary body of water.
Turquoise Damselfly: A vibrant bluish damselfly maneuvering the grasses of rural houses.

CLASSIFICATION

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Zygoptera
Family: Coenagrionidae
Genus: Agriocnemis
Species: Agriocnemis (rubescens) rubeola

Adult Damselfly: A female Agriocnemis damselfly that has changed its color from orange to green.

We live in nature – very rich and useful. So we should take good care and preserve these treasures if we want them to last for the next generations. Because if Mother Earth cries, all of these natural luxuries we have will vanish in just a sneeze of a typhoon, slap of a tsunami, punch of a soil erosion and a kick of a hurricane. Now, do you want that? Not at all! Let’s hold our hands, take a  walk and move purposefully for the future…

Awe-Stuffed Afternoon at La Union

WANDER TRANCE

Strolling the San Fernando stretch…

Laid-Back: The still and quiet San Fernando stretch in a mind-numbing afternoon.

A relief for some, a respite for many – that was how the NLE thing stirred us after its windup. But at the end of the day, this only means, suggests, and calls… party, party!

The swimming pool seemed like a rice field partied by rumbling giant frogs while the grubby beach looked as if a canal reveled by young indiscriminate children. Pretty much, they were all enjoying the scene and I was just watching here – envious – of the fun brimming over the picture.

So what can I do now? I knew I cannot jump over the crowded pool and plunge in the dirty beach!

I, tired and impatient, encouraged my friend then – who belittled the shoreline too on our first day at the resort – to go with me for a stroll. She stared me with disgust, saying, “That beach! What’s with that beach?”

“I don’t know. But we’ll see. Come on, it’s our fourth day here and we haven’t seen the San Fernando sunset,” I answered.

Clockwise from Top Left: The calm shoreline of San Fernando. Huge and colorful clams collected by the folks. On our way to the grotto.

At first, we were disappointed - the muddy shore, the wastes and the smell. But later, we were mesmerized - the clams, the grotto and the magnificent sunset.

Last Surprise: The dull moment was followed with a powerful orange-radiating sky scene.

In life, it is ok to say something as long as it is not fabricated, it does not involve character humiliation and most importantly, it will not keep the arrogance in you (just in case you realize you're wrong) later.

The Road Without An Asphalt: My Journey to July 2011 PNLE 2

My everyday routine isn't boring after all.

Reviewing for the Nursing Licensure Examination this coming July is indeed a tiring one. I may not have played the most strenuous sport but waking up early in the morning as well as going home late in the afternoon really drain my brain. Less oxygen goes in it. My neurons are exhausted. That is, I proceed to my room right away and yes, sleep immediately, without eating my dinner and worst, without taking a bath, everything!

It's my plan to post a lot of flowers for the month of May but due to my busy schedule, I failed to do so. It's the last day of May yet I'm posting the first and sadly, the last flower for the month. The photo was taken within the university in a cloudy day. It is actually a blossom of a yellow-flowering tree. I just love how these flowers look like in an arranged collective view. And seeing these, like them, refreshes the eye, the feelings, making the day not boring after all.

Biboy Ramirez Is In The Town!

Walking the shoreline of Pagudpud after Chedeng...

May 28, 2011 - Biboy Ramirez' body was found dead soul graced up a nearly lifeless sunset at Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte in a still gloomy Saturday, just after typhoon Chedeng hit the country.

The group came across a man in red jacket and camouflage short, sitting alone in a bench at the beach front, when one friend told us it was him, Biboy Ramirez.

Is he a star? Is he famous? As a loyal Kapamilya, I'd never seen him acting or doing something much, not until he joined ABS-CBN's Pinoy Mano-Mano, a celebrity boxing challenge along with Jordan Herrara who was later emerged as the winner.

We approached him and asked some questions. He replied enthusiastically - well, because he smiled at least. He was open for a conversation. We learned after that he was invited to escort in a Santa Cruzan in nearby town Burgos the next day. He just arrived earlier to relax and visit Pagudpud again.

At present, he can be seen in TV5's TV remake of Bagets, a known teen-oriented movie in the 80's. He plays the role of a parent with senior co-stars Candy Pangilinan, Bernadette Alison, Jao Mapa, Joy Viado, Raymond Lauchengco, etc.

Anyway, there are three things I observed:

1. I hate the smoke of a cigarette, it's smell and how it is emitted by smokers. They are just booming with self-confidence when they smoke. They just don't know, that aside to its associated danger to their health, they are also a one big threat to everyone thru second hand smoking. But when I tried to smell what Biboy was hitting, no stimuli reached my brain to interpret it. In other words, it's of no stress to my airway. I'm such an innocent with these things, these classier cigarettes.

2. I'm a fashion enthusiast. I can tell wether an apparel is worn the second time around in a show, in Glee for example and even in the local scene. And that bright red jacket before your eyes is also seen with him in one of their press launch I think, in Bagets. Also, his get-up (in the photo) is a flop to me but that's him, his own style and I will just leave it here. I don't judge not like other people do with their fellow.

3. I do want to have a fairer skin. I am a consumer of whitening products, I admit. This is just a negative side of many Filpinos, many Asians - we hate our tan colors as much as how foreigners love them. If only and if we had our skins the other way around, you will know the feeling. And Biboy had a fair white complexion except in his legs. Well, I have a fairer one - just this thing, just this time. LOL!

THIS AIN'T A SHOWBIZ NEWS, JUST A BLOG ENTRY!!!

The Road Without An Asphalt: My Journey to July 2011 PNLE 1

Just after the rain in May...

I don't know if I will GET MAD with the sharp sun passing through my "transparent" room or at least  BE HAPPY because it again smashed my "weak" alarm - but seeing myself late to an intensive review, to Sir Ruel, is a BIG no-no for me who is aspiring to top the July 2011 Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (cross fingers + sign of the cross)... so I really need to rise with all the muta, saliva and everything hope to learn something at the end of the day.

My day usually starts with either NPO (nothing per orem) or a full liquid diet and seldom for a high calorie diet for my breakfast. Hygiene as a very important entity for an OC like me comes next. Yes, I admit I have the behaviour, the trait but not the disorder nor the disease. I am like Felisa who washes her hands with soap and water then uses an alcohol after but that's only when I eat with my bare hands, in Ilocano, agkam-met (that known Pinoy way of eating). Then HELLO FUNCTION HALL - the venue of OLOPH-MMSU review, the hottest place on Earth! In Batac, I.N., I should say! LOL :D

But sometimes, I have this hard time waiting for tricycles (means of transportation in Batac) early in the morning. And instead of wasting these 5 to 10 minutes, I enthusiastically spend a walk along the road (refer to this blog's header image) to refresh with the morning breeze and search for photography subjects.

The above photo shows then a growing seed kissed by the sun after a rain in May. Aside from flowers, seeds also sprout in May. The rain drenches the seeds and after a slight movement of the soil, they are covered and now set to spring up. The photo also exhibits the morning dews, moisture from air, in the tip of the green grasses.

Pagudpud | The Other Side

A pre-Lenten post.

I cannot hear anything in the street. No single murmurs of wives’ wicked mouths. Or shouts of wobbling shirtless drunkards. Nor heavy treads of playing kids. Where are they? Where are these? Hmmn. The busy neighborhood was struck by that “conscientious” illness again. I think it's yearly.

It was indeed a one motionless day. It was such a frustration I cannot find tranquility inside. I cannot but think and think. All over. All the things around. Why that cat still approaches me even I already kicked her many times? Why she got traffic so long in her way to love me? Perhaps I should love the cat first so she can love me too. Hmmn.

Maybe because of the heat of the sun. Summer! Maybe because I cannot eat some favorite pork dishes. Almost Lenten… Maybe because she thinks I’m gay. Society?! But whatever may that be, I need to pray.

I was in this hammock at that time, just a few meters away from our house. Then my uncle sounded out and invited me to go to the beach. He was smiling. So I thought he was joking. Then my cousin tried to stagger me out of the swaying hammock and asked me if I will be joining them. I assumed and answered, “Ok.” Then my aunt, calling me… “Intayon” (Let’s go!). So, it’s true. Haha!

Then they got into detail. Showing a solution for a boring day! We’ll eat our lunch there and enjoy the water after. Basically, it was unplanned. Just some food plus a ride equals Hello Pagudpud again! Yay! Wheeeew! Nice math! Lol!

We ate our lunch first in a cottage. We had a grilled big red fish with their preferred soy sauce with calamansi. Mine, were my favorite vinegar, chili and sprinkle of salt – as usual! My aunt also prepared a buco salad as our dessert. Yummy! Then after some talks and laughs, we explored the place.

Pagudpud is known for its white sands (Saud Beach) as well as for some astounding rock formations (Timmangtang Rock). Though I never got bored, I am already used with these wonders. So, in visiting such common places, I always look for something new… either to criticize or to applaud. Sorry to say, I really criticize if there’s nothing to applaud!

I chose to get south away from the almost congested shoreline. As I trekked the area, I got a glimpse of this kid. Interest popped in my head – to what he was doing and to what is beyond this dreary point with full of unwanted scraps, like those scattered small rocks in the sands and strayed seaweeds in the water…

I continued walking and I didn’t expect for this view. Lush shrubs and inclined coconut trees. A view of the mountain. The 3D like picture of the clouds. I just want to touch them. So bulk. So real. And these magnificent rocks. I was mesmerized!

Then farther than this point were nicer views of the rocks. But there was a group of people, 20 or more, having fun, their picnic too. They were not tourists but residents of the town. I was able to recall two familiar folks because I get to see them in the market selling fresh fishes. And also, they go to our house to sell some. We love fish dishes. From sinigang (soup) to tinono (grilled). Anyway, I stepped backward. Too shy to mingle. They might think I'm an intruder. Haha! So I just focused on these irregular but perfect shaped and time casted stunning rocks on my zone. The texture adds sharpness to the sight. Awesome! They look so historic, ancient… Vintage indeed rocks!

My cousin was so eager and curious around. Poor little boy, he cannot find shells here. And only these huge stones. Still, they look great. The cuts were exceptional, as if they were sculpted.

I saw some villagers too, paddling in their boats, actually of two kinds - the balsa, a flat floating structure made up of at least 5 long and fat bamboo stands braced firmly and the traditional bangka, a banana-formed vessel made up of plywood with two bamboo outriggers. I don’t know if they were really fishing but looking at them made me envious. I would love to go boating too. It is also an advantage that you can view the Windmills of Bangui even you’re in Pagudpud using these boats.

What amazed me again are those diamond sparkles created by the rays of the sun in those small waves of water. They look so pleasing! Also, I found this rock which I think, was a coral reef long time ago, where you can see cascade of water!

Invigorating air. Traditional cottages. Slender coconut trees. Exquisite rocks. Really, I enjoyed this sudden jaunt on April. Woooh! Here’s a one last shot of the place, where we stayed and ate our lunch.

Wow! The place just rocked my creative mind. I would love to buy this lot, the area and improve. I will put up a resort and will name it “The Rocky World of Vhincci.” I will remodel cottages and upgrade them to a classier one. Landscaping the place is also a great option. There will also be a restaurant catering mainly seafoods and modified fresh buco drinks. I will be the one to choose menus for every meal. But my father will be the cook. He serves quality and delectable cuisines. Talents of friends, classmates and other acquaintances will be exhibited at night. Unemployed friends of the family will be hired for some assistance to maintain the place. Rooms for stay in customers will be decorated with fresh flowers, composed of wooden beds and lowlights. Aircondition will never be a need as ornamental plants will accumulate all carbon dioxide, music and not noise will calm emotions and feelings, not too energy-consuming lights will conserve power and reduce radiation – I mean, a feel-good environment plus the natural breezes of Pagudpud will make everyone refreshed and relaxed. Different kind of boats will also be available for tourists to have some activities and to overview the windmills. All guests will have some free souvenirs before leaving in exchange with their printed smiles and few messages to be posted in a wall. The theme would be more of Pinoy touch with few Asian incorporations. From plates, spoons, forks, walls, ceilings, tables, chairs, music, staffs’ uniforms, everything!

I have a lot of ideas in mind. I hope this dream will come true. I am so excited. But I’m still 20 years old. So, a successful future to me for now! Wish me luck!

Determination and strength: My luck, my charm not to stay out of the game!

It was lunch time, I didn’t pray for the food. Instead, for claps and appreciation. And to rank first in class. Three o’clock prayer came. I didn’t rhyme with the group. But wished to become the valedictorian, then cum laude after high school.

Dinner time. Bed time. All I prayed. Aside from kired ken pigsa (fortitude and might). Were honor, distinction, commendation, fame, name, merit, greatness and prestige.

Glad I really have true friends Christine, Essen, Sulamita and Joanne. Who helped me a lot. Again, to pray. Win things. The presidency of the student council. Mathematics challenges/quiz bees. And writing contests. From division, to regional, and national Schools Press Conferences (SPC).

March arrived and revealed a salutatorian title. I was frustrated. I accepted it. I stayed calm. I know my capability. But there's no such thing as forgiveness to my overlooked, biased position in the editorial staff of our school organ. Bullshit.

Summer sunshine rose. What should I do? Choose to be happy. Pray for the same things. And think of a course to take for college. Nursing. That was the trend before. And I bit it. Although, Journalism. And Mass Communication are my love.

As I entered college, I didn’t join to any organization. I stayed passive. Just in a corner. I didn’t want to move and dance, and just tumble after. I was scared. An after shock after high school. No politics. No intermissions. No confidence.

I tried to excel in my subjects. I topped an examination in Statistics. Got all the questions right. Some quizzes too. 100 percent. I became a scholar once. These, I experienced. But sad. It wasn’t in the whole course of my four years of studying. It was just hard to do well in things you know you don’t love. Well, I made an effort.

I didn’t compete. I just enjoyed. I didn’t want to make my life to suffer. To agonize. And to be bounded in the corners of a college life. I didn’t save my allowance. I spent it. I bought my luxuries. My wants. Cakes. Grilled chicken. Jo’bee. Chow’. And all.

I was so lax in my studies. I mean, I let it go the way it should be. I always came to class late. That was in the morning. But mind you, I balanced it in the clinical by being on time. I even experienced not to attend a class. At least, a minor subject. I slept in class – Jurisprudence in particular. Sorry, I’m bored.

But I found Community Health Nursing enjoyable. I love nature and I love the community. The environment. Every walk, I treasure. The folks. Their smiles. So perfect to capture. The eagerness among them. Their hospitality. All of these – so heartwarming!

Lastly, I gained friends. Something to be proud of. First year, Joan, my seatmates, my high school classmates and the rest. Second year was Dan and Dan (Lol). Third year was Missy, and the group. Fourth year were Mae, Cleo and the gang. I loved them much. I have them in crimes. Laughs. Downs. First, we were afraid, we were petrified. But then, we survived.

And now, here comes graduation! There's no countdown anymore. It's final. And indeed, fulfilling.

But what is more satisfying now is not having any award knowing you only gave a good play than having a secondary award knowing you gave a better play for it.

The photos were taken at Dariwdiw, Batac, Ilocos Norte during a community immersion. The place  would not cause admiration at first... but wait! After trekking it... after meeting the people... after the three days of community exposure... you will appreciate it more... more... and more... giving inspiration in our lives.
The Place. It was serene. Glowing effects around after the rain. Vast greens - the enormous swaying bamboos and their various crops. Myriad of different colored butterflies twirling in the atmosphere. Princes in their palaces and some died as captives. I mean frogs around, dead or alive. Plus, battalion of dogs.

The People. Warm welcome was catered to us. Smiles. Health-conscious. A Ms. Congeniality Housewife interviewed us. Some were busy. Doing household choirs. And visiting their farms.

Their Life. Deep well. Pump. Decomposed trees. Scraps were piled and very organized. There was this folk who walks... everyday I guess... to reach neighbors, and friends. The canteen. Offering affordable snacks, lunches. Banana cue for Php 3. Student meals for Php 25 comparing it with the usual Php 35 to Php 40. One serving of spaghetti for Php 15. Pancit/Arroz Caldo/Macaroni Soup for Php 10.

And what really amazed me was their road. Partially cemented (Refer to the photos). Enough to have a good friction and acceleration for transportation. And not to have a muddy trail when the rain comes.

Awesome place. Practical people. Simple life.

Bangui | Windmills

Which is which?

Bangui, Ilocos Norte. Full of promises. From undeveloped coastal area to vast verdant farmlands. Simple and happy folks inhabited the humble locality. Until, fifteen windmills were constructed along the seashore of the rich Bangui bay. Then five more were added recently.

But do we really have something to owe with these gigantic fans? No profound one. Not anything deep but superficial famousness. A big change. Urban dudes are now talking about Beng-gi. Well, that’s how would they pronounced the pungent Bang-gi. Gross! But denser than this includes lot of complaints.

Reports show that the building of these windmills had cut the coins of the fishermen. That windmill must be that sharp, steel cutter huh! Seriously, the catches of fishermen significantly dropped. Scientifically, I don’t know the explanation of this. But it is believed that the movement of the enormous fans of the windmills drives away the fishes. Too sad.

In as much as the work of these fishermen is concerned, these windmills at least welcomed some jobs. Don’t rejoice, it’s only a job. A job with no opportunity at all. No future. Coming up with cafeterias, coffee shops and restaurants nearby is one. Wait. Are you thinking? How would these businesses profit much? Tourists only come and go. They don’t stay at the place for hours. They are only after the pictures. Documentations.

How about the selling of souvenirs? Still not a good idea. One shop would be enough. People cannot just have a stand in a certain area and just wait and wait. In one week, you could only sell five? To ten stuffs, I'm pretty sure. Not productive.

Indeed potentials and other attributes of the town are overpowered or worst, disbanded by these fans. There’s a portion of the bay before that is patronized because of the magical stones, I mean stunning pebbles, that is opulently distributed in the place. But now? All gone. Like bubbles that burst in a matter of time.

Bangui does have a lot to offer. Natural resources such as falls, rivers and spring had been overlooked. The not established names of these just got worst, as I have said, had been overshadowed by these big fat fans.

Benefits. People think. People thought. That. That there are benefits of the folks living in the town, but actually… nothing. No thing. Even a lowered electric bill? No. Cannot be felt at all. And what’s the purpose of having a good source of electricity if wires and lines in the municipality are not organized, not managed well. When typhoon comes, it takes about 3 days that they can put back the current. No good service.

Woooh! A lot. Of complaints.

The above photos showcase the two sides of Bangui. When you are at the Bangui Viewdeck, a sort of a lookout of the whole town, you can view these majestic fans. Indeed, they are eye-catching. From toddlers peeping at the window of cars to foreigners holding a Canon to shot that picturesque scene. These Windmills are what they are into. This view on the left is always preferred by lot. Yes, a lot. But there are few who opt for the right view. You're right. It's on the right and it is right. Correctooooow! Magnificentooooow! And I am one of these few who chooses the very natural in this world. Ricefields. Mountains. Greeneries.

White Blossom

A post-Valentine post.

"I'VE FALLEN FOR YOU"
Ok, I see. Love is peculiar to every individual. That love is unleashed out of the blue. It is spontaneous, a force that unduly stir one's sentiment. You may look crazy. Selfless. Desperate. Who cares? Who knows our feelings? Who had just tasted a bit of bliss? Only us. Right Eyan?

Yay! Just got a consent from my friend Eyan to narrate her story of fondness to a guy, sort to have a family, living miles away. Let's just call the, lucky boy, RN. The two met in a not so nice world. I mean in a world of spams, of deceptions, of game-addicts, of pleasure seekers, of superficials, of boredom escapees, of business, of all the assortment in life, Facebook.

First question, who made the friend request? It's RN. My friend accepted it in one major reason, the guy looks like Adonis.
"A hell gift from above," as described by Eyan.
My friend was flattered 'cause she couldn't expect that a guy like him would befriend a simple, healthy, dark lady.

They get to know each other. Chat. Text. But never a call. RN has a girlfriend and a less-than-1-year-old son. The two are not yet married. RN is a R.N. A registered nurse. An O.R. nurse. They customarily talk about nursing -what my friend Eyan is also taking. The following days, Eyan's feelings blossomed. Yes, like a flower.
"Because he's nice," my friend explained when the group asked her why.
One day, they delve into a conversation, texting each other. Jokes. Laughs. Anything.
Eyan, still conscious and coherent, texted, "I have a crush on you."
RN replied. "Wrong send?"
Eyan, "No, I'm not."
She waited. For the reply.
Jake, another friend said, "If he's really on to you, he should replied the soonest."
RN replied. After 2 hours. Saying, "Hi!"
He already changed the topic.

They still text each other but now, not that often. Not that long. Not that expressive. No "Haha" and "Lol." It all became formal. Usual conversations ended abruptly. Then came a week that RN didn't replied anymore to Eyan. RN didn't logged in Facebook. After Eyan told her feelings, is dead air, dead line, all the dead! Emptiness was felt by Eyan.
"Friendship could have been an option," Eyan.
The above photos were taken while I was walking around the community, getting some fresh air. A piece of white blossom fell in my head.  I documented it because I have my camera on hand then. I also took a photo of the branch of tree where it came from, viewing the refreshing blue sky. The flower, aside from purity, doesn't have anymore to suggest. Later on, I just let it drift along the ground.
